Voiceworks Studio and the CSM Percussion Department Present ‘Rhythm & Jingle’ at the CIT Cork School of Music on Sunday 11th December.
The concert features the combined talents of Voiceworks Studio and the CSM’s Percussion Department students. RTE lyric fm presenter, Evelyn Grant and Voiceworks founder-director Gemma Sugrue are delighted to get together once again to help fundraise for Cork University Hospital. Gemma has been hitting the headlines recently, following her huge success with 2FM’s DJ Jenny Greene and the RTE Concert Orchestra at Electric Picnic, the 3 Arena and the 2fm ball.
Voiceworks tutor, Angela Ryan has joined forces with RTE Concert Orchestra percussionist and lecturer at the Cork School of Music, Stephen Kelly to produce a great programme ranging from the 5 year old ‘Super Singing Starz’ singing the cutest mash-up of Rockin’Robin/I saw Mammy Kissing Santa Claus, to the CSM Senior Percussion Ensemble. The music ranges from the dramatic opening of Richard Strauss’ ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ to a poignant Leonard Cohen tribute, and from John Lennon to Disney favourites. “Imagine” and “Happy Xmas/War is Over”, will be performed on a wide array of percussion instruments, from Marimbas and Timpani to Maracas and Cowbells. Several vocal groups represent the different age ranges within Voiceworks – the Junior Performers Workshop, the Youth Choir, The Teens Performers workshop, and the choral group ‘Vocalise’, trained by tutor Joanne Walsh.
The CUH ‘Scrubs’ Choir, under the direction of conductor, Patrick D’Alton and accompanist Lydia Thorpe, are delighted to be involved in the event. Scrubs are the CUH workplace choir, and have been increasingly busy since the choir was formed less than two years ago. As well as making a valued contribution within the hospital – singing at Masses and on various wards, the choir most recently received great acclaim at the hugely successful CUH ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ fundraiser at Cork Opera House.
As we all know, Drums are not just for Christmas! And the Junior Percussion Ensemble, directed by Fionn O’Ceallachain, which features CSM’s youngest percussion students, will display the budding talent coming through the ranks of the CSM percussion department. They get together once a week under Fionn’s careful guidance to learn the art of ensemble playing, and have prepared two pieces for Rhythm and Jungle.
The concert begins at 2pm in the Curtis Auditorium of the Cork School of Music on Sunday 11th December. The suggested donation in €8 per person. Tickets available at the door. All funds raised at the concert go to CUH Charity. Everyone is more than welcome to attend.
