End-of-Life Care

If you have experienced the loss of a loved one, you know we can never take away that pain. CUH Charity along with the End-of-Life Care Co-ordinator are simply trying to make the journey a little more gentle.

As a hospital, it is inevitable that some people will die while in our care. Just as every life matters, every death matters too – every death impacts a family, impacts the staff and impacts members of the wider community.

We want to ensure we offer dignity and care for the patient and all those journeying with the patient at end-of-life.

With this in mind, CUH Charity & the End-of-Life Care Co-ordinator for CUH have an ambitious plan to enhance our current practices.

          This offering/change will include:

  • End-of-Life Care Suites – where families can be with their loved one in their final days and hours in a space that is calm, serene and comfortable – with a kitchenette, overnight facilities, comfortable seating for family members. Allowing for the utilising of technology to video call family members overseas, listen to music or show family pictures.
  • Family Rooms – when families have to hear difficult news, it is important that this news is delivered is a suitable place offering privacy and respect away from the busy, clinical environment on the ward.
  • Memory Boxes – leaving the hospital without your loved one is incredibly difficult. Our goal is to help you carry their memory with you, through the provision of a memory box to each family, which contains a memory pouch for valuables (eg jewellery, watches etc), a remembrance candle, a card made of seed paper which can be planted at your home and other loving keepsakes.
