CUH is a Colorectal Centre of Excellence for Munster and provides support to patients in counties Cork, Kerry, East Limerick, South Tipperary and Clare and West Waterford who have had their bowel or bladder diverted surgically on to their abdomen and are required to wear a stoma bag or pouch over this opening. Last year the Stomatherapy Department at CUH treated 5,000 inpatients and outpatients and the number of patients is increasing every year.
Work on our new Stomatherapy Unit has gathered apace and is due to open it’s doors in the New Year! This welcome addition to the hospital will impact positively on the thousands of patients who use its service. A special thank you to the people of Cork who donated through Cork’s 96fm Radiothon this year and made this possible.
Positive impacts of the new Stomatherapy Unit for patients:
- Double the amount of patients can be treated in the new unit
- Waiting lists and patient waiting times will be reduced by half
- Greater level of privacy for patients as the new clinic is in a separate room (previously patients were separated in cubicles)
- The new unit has a state-of-the-art ventilation system
- Improved environment to work in with more natural light and is a new bright and colourful environment
Stoma-care nurses Marie MacSweeney Lyons, Karen Murphy and Laura O’Sullivan work at the Stomatherapy Department in CUH as part of a multidisciplinary team including Colorectal, Gastroenterology and General Surgery disciplines.
